Deer
I suddenly came face to face with a roe deer in one of Finland’s moss-covered forests. We looked into each other’s eyes and I let the glow of its fur soak into my gaze. I immediately wanted to buy a lovely little roe-brown coat to show off in, but in the end I decided to write a piece instead.
Sometimes, in my more sober moments, I come to the conclusion that certain concepts don’t actually exist; we’re simply constantly feeding an illusion. Politics is like that. So is love. So is life.
The title character of my play is a woman who is transformed by a turning point in her life. She pursues her desires. She begins to take control. Control of the country, for example. She becomes Prime Minister. I’d love to meet a woman like that. That’s why I’m bringing her to the Katona, so that this can happen – not just to me.
Dear audience, my friends far and wide! A new era, a new age is upon us in the theatre; I feel it very strongly. It has nothing to do with practicalities; I’m not talking about robots or modern technology. I’m talking about feelings. We must step into this new – or, if you prefer, the next – phase; there’s no other way.
