Death Rode Out of Persia
The protagonist of Péter Hajnóczy’s novella is, de facto, in deep trouble.
He lives in a country where this is nothing out of the ordinary. It’s just natural.
Educated people shovel slag, others live well without even finishing high school, cheerful pop songs soothe hearts in harmonious agreement—oh, just don’t think about bad things. And what could possibly be wrong if someone is copper-brown like a Native American, can drink thirteen bottles of beer in thirty minutes on the beach, and then dive headfirst into the lake?
After all, Brasch Izidor’s shoehorn will outlive us all anyway, and we won’t end up entwined naked with the person we dreamed of for ourselves.
