Hedda Gabler takes its final bow in Oslo

Kriszta Székely’s 2022 production will be presented twice as part of the international programme of the Ibsen Festival.

The festival has been organised every two years by Norway’s Nationaltheatret since 1990. It celebrates the legacy of Henrik Ibsen while bringing together new interpretations of his work and contemporary international theatre. Alongside productions by the Nationaltheatret itself, the festival presents international guest performances. This year’s programme includes the Katona’s Hedda Gabler, as well as Hedda by the German Berliner Ensemble and The Wild Duck, directed by Lithuanian director Oskaras Koršunovas.

“Hedda is not dragged down by the vortex – she is the vortex herself,” says Kriszta Székely. In her interpretation, Hedda is an intricate and deeply ambivalent character, both compelling and repellent, while the people orbiting around her gradually lose their own sense of balance as she begins to unravel.

The Oslo performances will mark the final performances of Hedda Gabler. In recent years, the production has been presented at several international festivals and guest venues, including in Turin, Sfântu Gheorghe and China. The Oslo invitation is another milestone in the Katona’s international presence, bringing its productions into dialogue with audiences and theatre communities in different countries.
