In this uniquely toned play, where narration alternates with traditional scenes, we follow the life of the protagonist, Andris Pálfy, from his preschool years to college, alongside the last twenty years of the Kádár regime. A gallery of portraits—parents, relatives, friends, lovers, and role models—creates a tableau that vividly captures the atmosphere of the years and decades leading up to the political change in Hungary, as well as the general mood of those living through it. Distinctive places and typical life paths are depicted, along with various survival and coping strategies, and different approaches to the search for freedom and compromise. Andris searches for his own path, fleeing from and rebelling against the place designated for him by the system, while also trying to meet the expectations of his family. However, he ultimately isn’t moving towards any clear direction. His story is one of coming-of-age, which remains incomplete in the year of the regime change.
Jánossy Lajos's play, a stage adaptation of his novel Örök hely és mindenhol idő (Eternal Place and Time Everywhere), hauntingly evokes an era—the socialism of the Kádár regime and its stifling atmosphere.
