The Katona has always been interested in dealing with the crucial problems of Hungarian society – this time the topic is emigration, a phenomenon that determines the lives of almost all Hungarian families: for one reason or another, economic or political, many people decide to leave Hungary and try their fortunes abroad.
The performance is mostly based on the actors’ improvisations, the scenes follow each other in a loose dramaturgical structure, some scenes are connected to each other, some others are not.
The musics of the performance are all taken from János Háry, a Hungarian folkoperabyZoltán Kodály, an old Hungarian ”emigration story”: the story is of a veteranhussarin theAustrianarmy, who tells fantastic tales of his heroism. He goes to Austria, defeats Napoleon and his armies, but finally renounces all riches in order to go back to his home village with his sweetheart. In our version, they arrive home to find an over-nationalist Hungary.
